Barrister takes a stand against courtroom chill
A barrister has complained to the courts service after being forced to prosecute in a cold courtroom.
Becky Owen yesterday said the temperature at Ipswich magistrates’ court was just 57F (14C) – lower than the minimum of (60F) 16C required under health and safety laws.
She said: “They knew that the boilers were broken on Saturday, so when we came into work they knew it was going to be cold. It didn’t get above 14C the entire time. I was shivering uncontrollably and I had to go and get my coat.” The HM Courts and Tribunals Service said: “A temporary issue with the heating at Ipswich was quickly resolved.”
