Where do we stand on... ?

Thuggs

- Eleanor Steafel

Ah, Uggs. Once the preserve of the 14-yearold girl, these soft, fluffy (slightly smelly after a while, if truth be told) sheepskin boots from Australia made you scuff your feet as you walked and probably contributed to an entire generation of poor posture.

Though they did keep your toes nice and toasty. I, for one, had far cosier feet in 2005.

But unlike low-rise jeans, stripy highlights and ponchos, which – thank God – have all remained firmly where they belong, in the early Noughties, the Ugg has always clung on somehow.

First, they reappeared in the form of expensive sheepskin slippers, gloves or ear muffs.

Now, presumably in an attempt to prove their fashion credentials, the brand has taken a punt on a rather unusual new line. Enter the “Thugg” – not necessarily what the label itself is calling the thigh-high

Ugg, but we like the nickname.

The brand has teamed up with designer Parisian label Y/project to bring us this particular crime against comfort dressing.

But then, this is the label that brought us jeans with detachable legs, and a denim jacket with sleeves hanging down to the knees.

Described by Glenn Martens, the Belgian creative director of Y/project, as like “putting your foot in a warm pot of butter” (sounds messy), the slouchy, over-the-knee boot debuted last week on the catwalk at Paris Fashion Week, and could set you back £995.

Sadly, you won’t be able to buy a pair until this autumn.

In the meantime, you could always invest in a pair of Ikea skeepskin rugs and wear one around each leg?
