A sound idea to protect churches’ chimes
sir – The news that the ringing of church bells is to be enshrined in planning law (report, January 20) is to be welcomed.
Here in west Norfolk we have the wonderful peals of St Nicholas’ Chapel and the Minster in King’s Lynn. Elsewhere, however, bells are rarely heard – except for the single toll summoning churchgoers on Sunday.
The sound of bells in full musical flight is part of our national heritage, and should be treasured. This latest development is a victory for common sense – and perhaps it will lead to a resurgence in bellringing across our communities. Avril Wright

sir – I was heartened to learn that church bells will be protected, after so many have been muffled due to complaints.
Perhaps similar protection could be extended to cricket grounds and golf courses, many of which have existed for more than 100 years but are now facing vexatious claims from homeowners who have moved to live on or near the perimeters. Constance Marriott
