Church debates new laws to cut retail food waste

- By Olivia Rudgard

THE Church of England could call on the Government to introduce new laws to prevent retailers from throwing away good food.

Plans to be considered today by the General Synod suggest legislation to deter retailers from cutting corners by failing to pass on food to the poor.

The motion, proposed by the Rev Andrew Dotchin, recognises companies that have pioneered ways of using waste food to feed those in need.

“When it comes to the end of a long day’s work, it is sometimes tempting for workers to throw food into the bin rather than sort out a collection of edible waste,” he said. “Legislation would help those on the shop floor, who want to make a difference to their community, ensure that this is what happens.”
