Severn wetland centre revived
The Slimbridge Wetland Centre in Gloucestershire is to be transformed in a £6million project that will celebrate the life of Sir Peter Scott, the conservation pioneer.
Slimbridge 2020 will turn the nature reserve on the Severn Estuary into an immersive wildlife experience to honour Sir Peter, who founded the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) in 1946.
Sir Peter’s house will be opened to the public for the first time and a living wetland theatre and aviary will create an innovative open space to showcase WWT’S work. A conservation breeding exhibit will tell the story of the Hawaiian goose, the first bird Sir Peter saved from extinction in the 1950s.
In the summer months a walkway will open on the estuary, allowing visitors to explore the natural habitats, species and landscapes of the area during a “safari experience”.
