Headhunting
SIR – Your leader (February 14) touched on the pranks suffered by the mummified figure of Jeremy Bentham, one of the founders of University College London. I recall one such incident while I was a student there.
During Rag week the students at a rival college, King’s College London (KCL), stole Bentham’s head.
Undeterred, UCL’S engineering students, acetylene torches in hand, visited KCL the following night and found an imposing statute of the college emblem – a lion. The private parts of the KCL lion were then delicately removed and traded for Bentham’s head.
