And this year’s award winner is ... a concrete bollard?

- By Helena Horton

A CONCRETE bollard has been unexpectedly nominated for a business award after social media fans joined the vote.

The “Fishergate Bollard” in Preston, Lancs, is known for being regularly knocked over by cars and has become a local landmark, with its own parody Twitter account.

Now, because of the account, which has 2,500 followers, the bollard has become one of eight finalists for the City Star Award.

The local Business Improvement District, which organises the award, said that members of the public nominated and voted for the bollard, and that 48,000 people in total cast votes to choose the finalists.

The person behind the bollard’s account, who wishes to remain anonymous, told the BBC that they were “knocked out” to be nominated for the award. They said the bollard had “always been overlooked, especially by rail replacement buses”.

Fellow finalist Ed Walker, who was nominated for editing Blog Preston, told the BBC: “I’ve never been up against the bollard before, although I know many drivers have.

“I wish the bollard the best of luck. It has certainly become a semi-regular feature of Preston life, when it’s not rolling down Fishergate Hill that is.”
