‘Rip off ’ energy bills for 11m could be capped
Energy bills for 11million households could be capped for the next five years to bring an end to “rip off ” energy bills under new legislation introduced in Parliament today.
The Domestic Gas and Electricity (Tariff Cap) Bill would allow Ofgem to limit tariffs until 2020, with the option to extend the cap annually until 2023.
The Prime Minister said the Bill, which the Government hopes will become law before next winter, would “force energy companies to change their ways”. The bill will put an “absolute cap” on the amount that energy companies can charge on standard variable tariffs.
