President urges new ‘terror’ rating for films

- By Ben Riley-smith and David Millward

DONALD TRUMP has suggested films should be given a “terror” rating to help stop school shootings, as he expressed concern over the “really violent” entertainment children watch.

During a gun policy meeting in the White House, the president also reprimanded senators, including those of his own party, for being “afraid of the NRA”, the National Rifle Association.

Mr Trump said: “The video games, the movies, the internet stuff is so violent, it’s so incredible. I see it. I get to see things that you would be amazed at. I have a very young son. I look at some of the things he’s watching and I say ‘How is that possible?’. And this is what kids are watching. And I think you maybe have to take a look at it. Maybe you also have to rate [movies] for terror?”

Mr Trump also reprimanded senators for failing to include provisions in their draft legislation that would see the age limit for semi-automatic rifles rise from 18 to 21. “Because you’re afraid of the NRA, right?” the president asked the senators, saying he was interested in the move despite the gun lobby’s opposition.

The comments came as Dick’s Sporting Goods, a major gun retailer where the Florida school shooter bought one of his weapons, announced it will stop selling assault rifles. It will also end the sale of guns to anyone under 21 and no longer stock high-capacity magazines, which can increase the death toll in a mass shooting.
