Running into a hero

SIR – In the mid-seventies I was struck under the eye by a cricket ball. The local medics in Ealing put me in an ambulance to take me to the eye hospital in Marylebone. Unfortunately, however, the ambulance dropped me at another hospital next door by mistake.

I was hastily transferred and taken to see a consultant, whom I instantly recognised (with my good eye) as Roger Bannister (Obituaries, March 5). He was charming, efficient and thorough, and I later emerged with eye intact and effective pain control.
