Former nurse, 93, spent days in hospital corridor

-

A 93-year-old former nurse, who was once honoured with an MBE for services to the NHS, spent six days in a hospital corridor with a spinal fracture due to a bed shortage.

Enid Stevens, who worked for the NHS for 41 years, was given a bed by staff for three days before being wheeled out and left in the corridor at St James’s Hospital, in Leeds, for a further six days.

She said she did not blame staff and pointed the finger at an overcrowded hospital, adding: “What happened to me was the most degrading thing I’ve ever experienced.”
