Civilised viewing

SIR – I too have been inspired by the BBC Civilisations programmes to view again both Kenneth Clark’s Civilisation (Letters, March 19) and Professor Jacob Bronowski’s Ascent of Man. Both are excellent: riveting and instructive. Moreover both are audible to the average viewer.

Civilisation is more than visual beauty. It presupposes a tolerant society which should observe the rule of law and democratic government. Ann Cranford Smith
