Funding the NHS

-

sir – We’d welcome any review of the current NHS funding arrangements (Letters, March 27). To date, the bill for my mother’s care home has been £335,000, rising by about £6,000 a month, and all paid for with what was at some point taxed income.

While those who can pay probably should, I question why it is considered acceptable for privately funded care home residents to be charged more than local authority-funded residents. This is effectively an informal tax on wealth that was taxed when earned.

My father, who dedicated his life to working in the NHS, must be turning in his grave. It should be no surprise that we are no longer a nation of savers: there is little incentive. Elizabeth Leeman
