Wuthering Heights (1939, b/w) BBC TWO, 1.00PM ★★★★★

 There have been countless adaptations of Emily Brontë’s classic 19th-century romance but none of them captures the spirit of her novel quite like William Wyler’s production. Merle Oberon and Laurence Olivier play the tragic lovers Cathy and Heathcliff, while David Niven is simply outstanding as the cowardly Edgar Linton. This is pre-war Hollywood at its very best.

Star Trek (2009) SKY ONE, 9.00PM ★★★★

 Mission Impossible III director JJ Abrams gives the big-bucks franchise a burst of life with this inspired and good-looking prequel about the early careers of the USS Enterprise crew. The focus is on Jim Kirk’s (Chris Pine) and Mr Spock’s (Zachary Quinto) rites of passage, but Simon Pegg brings some good old British humour to the role of Scotty. It’s a delightful tribute to the TV series.

Going in Style (2017) SKY CINEMA PREMIERE, 9.00PM ★★

 Zach Braff remakes a bumptious caper from 1979 with Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman, both rheumy of eye and wistful of cadence, plus Alan Arkin with the mordancy cranked to max. They star as three steelworkers whose pension pots have vanished in a corporate restructure. They decide to steal back what they’re owed, and not a penny more, but it leads to nothing more than benign comedy.
