Everything must go at Heathrow T1 sale

- By Daily Telegraph Reporter

BAGGAGE carousels, security scanners and even customs signs are all set to go under the hammer when Heathrow Airport begins to sell off its entire contents of Terminal 1 in a landmark auction.

A total of 110 check-in desks, nine travelators, information boards, security cameras and thousands of seats will go on sale on Saturday April 21. Everything from the hot water boilers to luggage reclaim belts, metal detector gates and lighting systems will be sold off to bidders who pre-register online through CA Global Partners (CAGP) the auctioneer.

Even painted murals that once adorned the walls are being sold off.

Daniel Gray, of CAGP, said he expected “a broad range of interest” for the sale, including from nightclubs and entertainment venues.

The sale is predicted to raise a sixfigure sum, with former Heathrow staff, aviation enthusiasts and new airports which will be able to re-install equipment at their own sites, also set to be among the expected bidders.

Mr Gray said: “Some of the signage in Terminal 1 is iconic and bound to attract interest from collectors.

“A sale such as this, comprising the entire contents and infrastructure of an entire major airport terminal is unprecedented, to say the least.”

Terminal 1 was first opened in 1968 and formally inaugurated by the Queen in April 1969.

It closed its doors in 2015 to allow for the expansion of Terminal 2.
