700 extremist prisoners in jails after crackdown
Seven hundred prisoners have been identified as a potential extremism risk, the Ministry of Justice has said.
The figure, published for the first time since authorities launched a major crackdown on radicalisation behind bars, includes inmates flagged up over concerns they hold extreme Islamist or far-right beliefs.
The data was disclosed as the Government announced a separation centre to house the “most subversive” prisoners had opened at HMP Full Sutton in east Yorkshire.
The MOJ said there has been a 75 per cent increase in prisoners convicted of terrorism-related offences in the last three years.
