Killer driver ‘bought car in midlife crisis’
♦ A Porsche driver who killed a barrister while speeding had bought the vehicle during a mid-life crisis, a court heard.
Michael Sunnooman, 52, was travelling at at least 40mph when he hit 64-year-old David Batcup as he crossed a road outside a charity event.
Mr Batcup was thrown 22ft into the air as if “he were a rag doll” after being hit by Sunooman’s white Porsche 911, the court was told.
Sunnooman, of Tooting, south-west London, was jailed for a year at the Old Bailey yesterday after admitting causing death by careless driving.
The painter and decorator, who still lives with his mother, had saved up for the £10,000 Porsche in “a sort of mid-life crisis”, it was said.
Mr Batcup was hit on Sept 13 2016, after leaving a Law Rocks “battle of the bands” gig at The Bedford Arms pub in Balham, south-west London.
Mr Batcup had more than 35 years’ experience in criminal courts on high-profile cases involving murder, money laundering and drugs.
