President’s deadline to solve Nicaragua crisis
The Catholic church in Nicaragua has called for a deadline of one month for Daniel Ortega, the country’s president, to resolve issues that triggered Nicaragua’s worst unrest in 11 years.
Cardinal Leopoldo Brenes told a demonstration that a national dialogue should begin between the president and protesting students.
The rally took place hours after students issued conditions for talks with Mr Ortega. At least 43 people have died in protests triggered by the president’s proposed welfare reform, which he has now suspended.
