The merits of naming a submarine Agincourt

-

sir – The Royal Navy’s choice of the name Agincourt (report, May 15) for its new Astute-class submarine is most commendable.

It acknowledges this country’s proud military history and, more importantly, will annoy the French. Hugh Neve

sir – There has been an Agincourt before, a battle-class destroyer of repute sent to the breakers’ yard 40 years ago or more, but the name had not been used previously for a submarine. It had been hinted that HMS Agincourt was to be named HMS Ajax or HMS Achilles, but it seems that those famous names have fallen out of favour.
