Insurance costs for your pet will vary not only by what the policy covers and the animal’s age, but also by breed – larger breeds can be more expensive, while others may be more prone to illness.

Consumer group Which? calculated the costs for a lifetime policy by breed. The prices assume an owner based in Cambridge, with a pet that is three years old. (Which? averaged the cheapest five annual quotes for each breed). First, dogs:

French bulldog, £358

Golden retriever, £187

Labrador retriever, £182

Cockapoo, £141

Cocker spaniel, £141

Crossbreed, £139

Border collie, £134

Jack Russell terrier, £133

Here are the findings for cats by breed, according to Which?:

Maine Coon, £114

Domestic long hair, £86

British short hair, £85

Which? also surveyed how your pet’s insurance could vary depending on where you live. These figures show the highest average premium for insuring a single dog on a lifetime policy by region:

East of England: £565

East Midlands: £535

South-east England: £517

London: £493

South-west England: £470

North-west England: £427

West Midlands: £424
