Door-to-door rail fares cover travel by train and taxis

- By Katie Morley CONSUMER AFFAIRS EDITOR

RAIL passengers are to benefit from the introduction of “door-to-door” tickets which cover the cost of trains and taxis in one fare.

The new fares will combine transport methods to pick travellers up from their doorsteps and drop them off at their final destination, saving them the trouble of getting themselves to and from the train station.

Virgin and Uber announced a joint scheme yesterday in which passengers will receive texts reminding them to book a discounted taxi to or from the train station to complete their journey.

Virgin said this was a “first step towards a fully integrated and seamless booking experience” in which entire journeys – including taxis – will be secured through new all-in-one tickets.

The moves were welcomed last night by transport campaigners, who said door-to-door options would give consumers more choice.

It comes as the Rail Delivery Group, which represents train firms in the UK, is expected to launch a consultation on a radical shake-up of train fares.
