Nursery school’s tropical fish die in planned power cut

-

 A pre-school’s tank of 60 tropical fish died after an energy firm forgot to tell teachers about a planned power cut.

UK Power Networks has apologised and given the school £1,000 in compensation after teachers found all the fish had died after power had been cut to the school for two days.

The energy firm had failed to alert Scallywags pre-school in Rainham, Kent that electricity was being cut off during a weekend in March.

When nursery teachers arrived at work on March 26 they found the 60 fish that rely on heat and a pump to oxygenate the water, floating at the top of the three fish tanks.

Kelly Mumford, the nursery manager, said: “Luckily staff got in early so we were able to remove the fish from the three tanks to avoid any distress to the children. The older ones noticed, so we just had to say they had gone to a new home.” She added that she was “angry” at UK Power Networks for not alerting them to the power cut.
