Melania continues to stay out of public eye after operation

- By Ben Riley-smith

MELANIA TRUMP will not join her husband at the Camp David presidential retreat this weekend, marking 22 straight days without a public appearance by the First Lady.

Mrs Trump was last seen on May 10 and underwent surgery for a “benign” kidney issue on May 14, spending a few days in hospital before being released.

Her non-appearance at events she would normally be expected to attend has created headlines in the US media and triggered conspiracy theories.

But she addressed them on Wednesday, writing on Twitter: “I see the media is working overtime speculating where I am and what I’m doing. Rest assured, I’m here at the White House [with] my family, feeling great and working hard on behalf of children and the American people.”

Mr Trump will spend the weekend at Camp David – where he rarely goes, preferring instead his Florida resort Mar-a-lago. But the White House confirmed yesterday that Mrs Trump will not be with him.

At the time of her operation, Mrs Trump’s communications director said she “underwent an embolisation procedure to treat a benign kidney condition”. She said “the procedure was successful and there were no complications” and added: “[She] looks forward to a full recovery so she can continue her work on behalf of children.”

Mrs Trump was treated at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Centre in Washington. It is unclear when she will next appear in at a public event.
