City council seeks jail term for tree protesters
SHEFFIELD city council is prepared for tree-felling protesters to be jailed, a court has heard.
The council has taken four protesters to the High Court in the city. Paul Brooke, Simon Crump, Benoit Compin and Fran Grace are all said to have breached an injunction, imposed last July, by obstructing felling.
Mr Justice Males, the judge, said he wanted “reassurance” that the application was brought on the instructions of democratically elected councillors.
After the break, Yaaser Vanderman, representing the council, said that Julie Dore, the council leader, “positively agreed that proceedings should be brought”.
The hearing is expected to last three days.
