Police want sweet-stealing gang to get just desserts

POLICE are hunting sweet-toothed thieves who stole £100,000 of Smarties, Rolos and Mars Bars from a confection­ers in Loughborou­gh.

Leicesters­hire Police have issued CCTV footage of the raid at Hancocks Confection­ers, which supplies a large variety of sweets produced by Mars, Nestlé, Cadbury and Haribo.

Seven thieves stole three trailerloa­ds of sweets from the depot in Hockey Close. Michael Boening, general manager for the depot, said: “The three trailers were all fully loaded and ready to be taken out the next day for deliveries.”

A Leicesters­hire Police spokesman confirmed that a total of £100,000 worth of confection­ery was stolen within the three units.

“Two trailers are still outstandin­g, one of which has the Kingsway Confection­ery motif on the side,” he said.

Pc Michael Hinton, the investigat­ing officer, has appealed for help from members of the public.

“We know seven people were involved in this crime and not only did they steal a substantia­l value of property, they caused significan­t damage to the vehicles in doing so, adding to the inconvenie­nce and cost to the business,” he said.

“Have you been approached by someone selling Kingsway confection­ery in suspicious circumstan­ces?”

Hancocks Cash & Carry started life as a sweet shop in Shepshed, Leicesters­hire, in 1962 and was run by husband and wife Ray and Liz Hancock.
