Tough checks on terrorists freed from jail
♦ Convicted terrorists will be treated like sex offenders under plans for a new “terror register”, ministers have announced.
As part of the Counterterrorism and Border Security Bill, they will have to register with police in the same way sex offenders do, handing over their address, vehicle details and documentation, and have their fingerprints and DNA kept for five years instead of two. Police will also get new powers to search their homes once out of prison.
A Home Office document stated that “operational experience” has shown the current reporting guidelines terrorists must adhere to once they leave jail are not tough enough and need to be strengthened.
