-

A disappointingly small number of trees have been planted in England in the past year, official figures show.

Just 1,500 hectares of woodland were planted last year, falling far below the Government and Forestry Commission’s aim of 5,000 ha.

Since announcing the drive to increase woodland cover from 10 per cent to 12 per cent by 2060, planting rates have remained frustratingly low.

John Tucker, of Woodland Trust, said: “These figures are all the more shocking considering the growing evidence of the importance of trees and woods in tackling air pollution, improving water quality and aiding natural flood management, not to mention what they offer for wildlife and the rural economy.”

He said weak protection of ancient woods was also to blame, and raised hopes the Government’s 25-year plan for nature will herald a fresh approach, Samantha Herbert
