Smart meter spending

SIR – Given the current economic climate, I find it amazing that the Government should spend billions on promoting smart meters and encouraging people switch to a cheaper energy supplier, when in most cases the meters don’t work after the switch (report, June 23).

It would have been far better for the Government to have spent the money on the NHS and defence. Roderick Pottow

SIR – I had a new meter and a smart meter installed. The smart meter has never worked, as it is placed too far away from the main meter. Apparently this is a well-known problem, and I was told that technology would one day be available to overcome it.

Quite why the distance was not measured when I first agreed to have the meter installed, I do not know. S W Bell
