Tory anger as clean energy project shelved
THERESA MAY was last night criticised by her own MPS for shelving a £1.3 billion wave-power energy project previously backed by ministers.
The Government has rejected plans to build a ground-breaking tidal lagoon project that would have used the power of the sea to generate clean energy, arguing that the costs were too great.
The decision has swept away years of planning and the findings of an independent review, which concluded that the project in the Swansea Bay area should go ahead. The Welsh Government had already promised to invest £200 million to ensure its completion.
Greg Clark, the Business Secretary, told MPS that he could not sign off on the project, “however novel and appealing”, when “much cheaper alternatives exist”.
The decision was condemned by politicians from across south-west Wales. The Welsh Conservatives said there was “no disguising” the impact it would have on the local economy.
