- By Nick Squires in Rome

GEORGE CLOONEY was taken to hospital yesterday after being involved in a traffic accident while driving a motorcycle in Sardinia, where he is making a TV series.

The Hollywood actor and director was reported to be only lightly injured after colliding with a car near the town of Olbia, in the north of the island.

He was taken by ambulance to the John Paul II Hospital in Olbia with “trauma to his knee”, according to local reports. He was later discharged but will need a course of physiotherapy to repair the damage.

“He is recovering at his home and will be fine,” his spokesman said.

Amal Clooney, his wife, the highprofile human rights barrister based in London, rushed to the hospital after the accident, according to La Nuova Sardegna, a local newspaper.

Clooney had just left his hotel on the Costa Corallina – the Coral Coast – and was going to the set of his new TV series, based on the 1961 Joseph Heller novel Catch-22, when he was reportedly hit by a car. The driver of the Mercedes estate stopped and called for help. Police are studying the site and trying to ascertain how the accident it happened.

Clooney has been in Sardinia for several weeks directing the six-part series.

The star also has a role in the series, as does Hugh Laurie and Giancarlo Giannini, the Oscar-nominated Italian actor. It is due to be shown on Channel 4 next year.
