Facebook blocks links to feminist website
FACEBOOK has been accused of censorship after links to the website of a feminist campaign group, whose members are concerned about plans to allow transgender people to “self-identify” as women, were blocked.
The social media giant temporarily prevented users from visiting and sharing Woman’s Place UK’S website, saying it was for “safety” reasons as the site was “malicious”. The links were restored within a few hours following complaints from several users.
Woman’s Place UK was established in September 2017 after the Government pledged to amend the Gender Recognition Act to allow people to change their gender legally without medical authorisation.
The group say they want a “simple and reasonable” debate on the impact of the Act. They add that the Government “can’t bring in a change to the law that affects women’s rights without consulting women”.
Kiri Tunks, founder of Woman’s Place UK, said of Facebook’s actions: “It is tedious and it just wears you down. We are clearly not a malicious hate group, but that constant battering is meant to make us give up and go away – and that’s not going to happen.”
Facebook was contacted for comment.
