How long before the American press contingent will need translators in press conferences for their benefit? Asked to sum up Carnoustie’s brutal finishing stretch in one word, Rory Mcilroy plumped for “slog”. His American inquisitor looked nonplussed. “Can you translate ‘slog’?”, to which Mcilroy replied: “No! I guess, ‘tough’. ‘Tough’ is sort of generic. Anyway, I’ll get my dictionary out next time, or thesaurus.”
