Barclays creates 2,500 jobs with Glasgow campus move

- By Iain Withers

BARCLAYS plans to create up to 2,500 jobs in Glasgow after committing to a new campus in the city on the banks of the river Clyde.

The FTSE 100 bank said the move would double its workforce in Scotland, creating a mixture of technology and operations jobs in a boost to the country’s financial services industry.

Barclays is acquiring the campus from Drum Property Group and the project will form part of the developer’s wider Buchanan Wharf scheme.

Staff are expected to start transferring from 2021. The bank said the new roles would be created over time and no relocations were being announced other than from older sites in Glasgow.

Scottish Enterprise is providing a grant of nearly £13m towards the project. As part of the deal, Barclays has committed to making at least 42pc of the new jobs “high value”, while 341 posts will be available to disadvantaged workers or those who have a disability.

Barclays said the campus would “play a pivotal role” in its long-term strategy. The lender is currently finalising the Glasgow buildings’ design. Its other operations campuses are in Whippany, New Jersey, and Pune, India. Scotland’s first minister Nicola Sturgeon hailed the project as “transformational for Glasgow”.
