Khan vows to recover Pakistan’s looted wealth
IMRAN KHAN has promised to retrieve any wealth plundered from his country and stashed in the UK by corrupt Pakistani politicians.
The former cricketer used his first meeting with British officials since his general election win to say he had a “firm resolve” to pursue the laundered money. Attacks on the greed of Pakistan’s dynastic ruling elite were the cornerstone of a populist anti-corruption drive that swept Mr Khan to power.
The UK, which has brought in new legislation to combat money laundering and corruption as it tries to tackle London’s reputation as a haven for dirty money, said it would “work constructively” with the new leader.
Meanwhile, Mr Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-i-insaf party yesterday backpedalled on suggestions he would invite foreign dignitaries and sports stars to his inauguration as prime minister later this month. Officials said the event would be arranged “with austerity”.
