Dwindling workforce
SIR – James Pomeroy is right that a number of challenges follow when a declining share of the population is of working age (Business, August 6) – but the fact that Britain failed to address fertility rates 20 years ago is no reason for not addressing them now.
To ensure a properly balanced population in 20 years’ time, we need to identify and modify policies which discourage marriage and child-bearing. We will not be alone: Hungary is already focusing on the link between government policy and birth rates. David J Critchley
