Church seeks new minister for ‘heavenly’ island paradise

- By Daily Telegraph Reporter

A CHURCH in Scotland is seeking a minister to take over the UK’S most idyllic kirk, situated just yards from a beach on an island known as “the Hawaii of the north”.

The Church of Scotland has placed an advert for someone to fill the vacancy at the kirk on a “heavenly” island paradise, complete with a house.

The Inner Hebridean island of Tiree gets its nickname because of its sunshine, white sandy beaches and waves that make it a mecca for surfers.

The new minister will be required to support a congregation with as few as 15 people at some times of year, and become chaplain to Tiree High School.

The position includes a manse near the shoreline outside the village of Scarinish, which has “views to the Treshnish Isles, Mull and Iona across the passage of Tiree”.

However, applicants are advised that the island’s population of 650 will know their minister’s every move. The advertisement states: “Tiree is not a place that allows for anything other than going ‘all in’.

“People will know when you leave the manse; they’ll know where you’ve been visiting; what you’ve been buying in the Co-op and when your cooker has stopped working.

“But they will also wave and stop for a chat when they see you; notice the work you put in to visiting and come by with food or invite you round for dinner when your cooker isn’t working.”

The kirk says its members are “looking for someone whose heart will truly resonate with this unique community”.
