I’m always searching for a thin lining sock that doesn’t ruin a look – there’s nothing worse than a saggy seam on show.

Falke’s fleshcoloured socks sit low enough to not give you a cankle; I also like Cos for its sheer coloured ones, I’ve got them in bright pink, which has worked out pretty well for me this summer.

Heist – which has previously done very clever things with tights – has extended its focus on to socks – to great result.

They come with either a jaunty coloured stripe around the top, or in simple block black. Great for under suit trousers, or frankly any trousers.

I’d even do them with a long skirt.
