Traveller inmates build caravan in jail grounds

-

Traveller prisoners have built a caravan in the grounds of a jail to celebrate the community in prison.

Inmates at HMP Rye Hill, a 660-capacity jail for sex offenders in Warwickshire, spent months building the caravan in the jail workshop.

There are believed to be around 30 inmates who are of “Gypsy/ Romany/ Traveller” origin.

Peter Small, the director at HMP Rye Hill, said: “We live in a multicultural society and prisons are a reflection of that diversity.

“Ensuring that prisoners can embrace their cultures, traditions and faiths is an integral part of our work.”
