‘Anti-royal’ presenter cried over wedding

- By Harry Farley

A BBC newsreader who developed something of an anti-royal image has claimed he wept when the Duchess of Sussex walked down the aisle.

Simon Mccoy is known for his amusingly lacklustre enthusiasm when reading news about the Royal family. But after describing fans of royalty as “fruitcakes” in the build-up to the wedding, he yesterday claimed he shed a tear when Meghan Markle married Prince Harry.

“The last time I cried was over the royal wedding, when Meghan was walking up the aisle, Harry saw her for the first time and just went ‘wow’,” he told the Sunday Express S Magazine. “It was a magical moment.”

The presenter has become known for his sarcastic and “honest” coverage. When reporting from outside the Lindo Wing on the day Prince George was born, he told viewers: “Plenty more to come from here of course, none of it news, of course because that will come from the Palace. But that won’t stop us, we’ll see you later.”

When the due date of the Duchess of Cambridge’s third child was announced, he said: “Clear your diaries, get the time booked off because that’s what I’m doing.”
