‘Attractive’ fish found in deepest ocean
♦ Three new species of “attractive fish” have been discovered living in what scientists describe as one of the deepest places on Earth.
The “jelly-like” snailfish, found at more than 23,000ft, are part of the Liparidae family. A team found the species living in the Atacama Trench that runs along the Pacific coast of South America.
They are about 12in, translucent and do not have scales They have been temporarily named as pink, blue and purple Atacama snailfish.
The study will be presented at the Challenger Conference at Newcastle University, which runs until Sept 14.
