‘Attractive’ fish found in deepest ocean

♦ Three new species of “attractive fish” have been discovered living in what scientists describe as one of the deepest places on Earth.

The “jelly-like” snailfish, found at more than 23,000ft, are part of the Liparidae family. A team found the species living in the Atacama Trench that runs along the Pacific coast of South America.

They are about 12in, translucen­t and do not have scales They have been temporaril­y named as pink, blue and purple Atacama snailfish.

The study will be presented at the Challenger Conference at Newcastle University, which runs until Sept 14.
