Devon and Cornwall police said officers were treated by a Hazardous Area Response Team as an address in Bideford was cordoned off.

A retired scientist named by The Sun as Dr Chris Busby was held by police, who had responded to concerns for the safety of a woman. Dr Busby is a regular on Russia-funded TV station RT, and has claimed Britain may have carried out the Salisbury poisonings.

The Telegraph understands officers were overcome by the foul state of the house, which possibly contained badly husbanded household products.
