University plans to make amends for slavery links

-

The University of Glasgow has become the first British university to set out a programme for “reparative justice” after a report found it was a significant financial beneficiary of the slave trade.

The “Slavery, Abolition and the University of Glasgow” report, published by the university, concluded that it had received bequests and other financial support derived from the profits of slavery. The donations, worth between £16.7m and £198m in today’s money, helped pay for the current campus at Gilmorehill.

Reparations are to include founding a new centre for the study of slavery.
