Now the EU has plainly said ‘Non’, Mrs May had better be for turning

-

SIR – The EU has confirmed that Chequers is dead. What is Theresa May going to say at the Conservative Party Conference – “Any deal is better than no deal”?

If she wants to avoid a Conference like 1992, the Lady has to be for turning.

SIR – If, as has been suggested, Mrs May is relieved of her post as Prime Minister in the New Year, perhaps she could take over the leadership of the Lib Dems. She would be a perfect fit.

SIR – Having just been watching the EU session from Salzburg, I was struck by the imprecise and biased level of the comments from the various EU officials, compared with the clear comments by the British Prime Minister.

Donald Tusk, the president of the European Council, stumbled over his, frankly, contradictory statements.

The Czech representative was equally incoherent in his statements, while the Maltese prime minister, whose own government has presided over some unusual domestic activities, supports a second UK referendum which would clearly deprive British voters of their democratic rights.

SIR – EU leaders are keen to advise Britain to hold another referendum on Brexit. May I encourage them to hold a referendum in their own countries on leaving the EU?

I am sure that the Danes, Dutch, Greeks, Italians, Swedes, Hungarians, Czechs and even Germans, in fact everyone, would welcome the opportunity. Well, the voters would, anyway.

David Standring

Midhurst, West Sussex SIR – Would it be too much to hope that Theresa May told Joseph Muscat, the prime minister of Malta, that rather than try to alter a democratic referendum vote in the United Kingdom, he should return home and deal with the illegal slaughter of thousands of migrating songbirds and the murder of journalists who dare to reveal the corruption so rife in Malta?

For what it’s worth, I voted Remain, but having seen the true colours emerging from EU leaders, I’m convinced that leaving the EU as soon as possible is the best decision. GP White

SIR – Since 1972, there have been 48 referendums on the EU in its member states. The only ones re-run were those which had gone against the EU. Oliver Davies

SIR – Why not make it the best of three?
