AI weapon gives soldiers foolproof set of eyes in battle
A CUTTING-EDGE weapon that uses artificial intelligence to scan battlegrounds for enemy movement has been successfully tested for the first time.
The system, developed by British experts, uses the latest technology to monitor and track operations in builtup areas.
It rapidly flags dangers to allied soldiers, giving them an “edge” in a war zone, the Ministry of Defence said.
Known as Sapient, it is claimed to reduce human error and free up soldiers who would otherwise have to monitor live feeds to observe enemy movement.
It was tested by Canadian soldiers on an urban battlefield in Montreal alongside a range of experimental military technology created by other nations, including robotic exoskeleton suits, night vision and surveillance systems.
Stuart Andrew, the defence minister, said: “This British system can act as autonomous eyes in the urban battlefield.” Sapient was developed by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory, and UK industry partners.
