A grateful town

SIR – Many in the beautiful, artistic seaside town of Ilfracombe appreciate Damien Hirst’s Verity statue, as well as the quality of the buildings he has renovated (report, September 25).

Before Verity was placed, the town council held a public meeting at which the vast majority attending were in favour of it.

Verity is art, whether you like it or you don’t, and it creates a great deal of reflection and debate among those lucky enough to visit it.
