Feminists say ‘womxn’ is offensive to women
COMPANIES have come under fire for using the word “womxn” instead of “women” in a bid not to exclude transgender people.
The Wellcome Collection museum was forced to apologise after using the word to describe women and nongender-conforming people in promotional material for its exhibition Daylighting, which “explores the presence of womxn through art, thinking and speculations”.
But feminists complained that the word excluded biological women, and that no one called men “mxn”.
Jess Phillips, the MP for Birmingham Yardley, said: “I’ve never met a trans woman who was offended by the word woman being used, so I’m not sure why this keeps happening. [It is] as if internet dissent now replaces public policy.”
Clothing shop H&M has also been criticised after an event it is sponsoring used the word “womxn” instead of “women”. H&M has been contacted for comment.
