Salvini says ‘ethnic shops’ should close by 9pm
Italy’s hardline interior minister wants “little ethnic shops” – convenience stores often run by Asian immigrants – to close by 9pm because they attract “drug dealers and hell raisers”.
Matteo Salvini, who is also the head of the anti-immigrant League party, said he would add an amendment to a security bill going through parliament.
He denied that the move was racist or targeted at migrant-run businesses.
In recent years, hundreds of “mini-markets” have opened up in Italian cities, many run by Bangladeshi immigrants.
