Car­di­nal ac­cused of abuse cover-up re­signs

Pope Francis yes­ter­day ac­cepted the res­ig­na­tion of Don­ald Wuerl af­ter the Wash­ing­ton car­di­nal be­came en­tan­gled in two sex­ual abuse and cover-up scan­dals.

But in a let­ter re­leased by Car­di­nal Wuerl’s of­fice, the Pope sug­gested he had be­come a scape­goat.

The 77-year-old had been ac­cused of help­ing to pro­tect child-mo­lest­ing pri­ests while bishop of Pitts­burgh from 1988 to 2006 and turn­ing a blind eye to years of al­leged abuse by Theodore Mc­car­rick, his pre­de­ces­sor as Wash­ing­ton’s arch­bishop.
