Short prison sentences

- MD Allen East Grinstead, West Sussex

sir – The Catholic Bishop of Arundel and Brighton (Letters, October 18) says “short-term sentences result in immense harm for the most vulnerable prisoners, who include addicts, women and those suffering with ill mental health”, and that prison is “a system failing to rehabilitate them”.

Prison is a last resort for the courts, but for a prolific offender, or one who refuses to engage with probation service staff, a short sentence can be the only viable option.

Also, rehabilitation is not something that is done to offenders, but with them. Unless someone is ready to accept the help offered, including with addiction, chances of success are low.
