Farm shop first CA Game Champion
Blagdon Farm Shop in Northumberland, which saw game sales soar by 200% last Christmas, is the winner of the inaugural Game Champion award, a new category in the annual Countryside Alliance Awards.
“We very quickly indentified that when processing game you’ve got to add value to the product,” said butchery manager Simon Osborne (pictured with the shop’s co-founder, Jo Celerier). Stuffed pheasant, pheasant or venison casseroles, partridge scotch eggs and pheasant pakoras were among the game products available in the shop last winter. In the summer, the shop’s catering van tours local equestrian shows and visits inner-city food festivals selling venison burgers and game sausages.
Last year, 8,000 birds went through the shop’s processing facility and this season the figure is set to double. “This award is for all the guns, beaters and pickers-up in Northumberland who keep this fabulous meat coming through,” said Osborne.
